Scientific Background: Auranofin is derivative of gold and has been widely used as an anti-arthritic drug. It inhibits both leukocyte activation pathways at multiple sites and the release of inflammatory mediators from human macrophages, basophils, and pulmonary mast cells. Auranofin has been shown to inhibit human neutrophil 5-lipoxygenase, thioredoxin reductase (TrxR), IκB kinase (IKK).
