Additional info: The peptide was found in the salivary gland venom of the lizard Gila monster. It belongs to the VIP-secretin family of peptides and has many VIP-like actions. Helospectin-immunoreactivity has been demonstrated in the neurons of the gut.
Absorption with 10-100 ug helospectin per ml diluted antiserum abolishes the staining, while secretin, PHI and PACAP do not.
Cross-reacts with helodermin.Positive control: Stefanini-fixed frozen sections of rat small intestine (1% carbodiimide added to the fixative).
