Background: EPHA1 is a member of the Eph family of receptor tyrosine kinases that have been implicated in mediating developmental events, particularly in the nervous system (1). Receptors in the Eph subfamily typically have a single kinase domain and an extracellular region containing a Cys-rich domain and 2 fibronectin type III repeats. EPHA1 seems to be a marker of the differentiated normal epidermis and its downregulation in nonmelanoma skin cancer may contribute to carcinogenesis of these very frequent human tumors. EPHA1 represents a new potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target in nonmelanoma skin cancer (2).
