Background: GFP (green fluorescent protein) presents green fluorescence, and it was first identified in Aequorea Victoria. It has become widely used in cell biology to monitor gene expression, protein localization, and protein-protein interactions. Its popularity prompted the development of mutants, such as the eGFP (enhanced GFP). Fluorescent proteins and their mutated forms, blue, cyan, and yellow have become useful and ubiquitous tools for making chimeric proteins, where they function as fluorescent protein tags. Typically, they tolerate N- and C-terminal fusion to a broad variety of proteins. They have been expressed in most known cell types and are used as a noninvasive fluorescent marker in living cells and organisms.
