Additional info: Mucins are high molecular weight glycoproteins which constitute the major component of the mucus layer that protects the gastric epithelium from chemical and mechanical aggressions. In humans, at least 14 mucin genes have been identified that code for the mucin proteins. MUC6 is a secretory mucin that is part of a family of at least 14 high molecular weight glycoproteins made by many epithelial tissues. MUC6 is preferentially expressed in non-neoplastic gastric tissue, specifically in the pyloric glands. During neoplastic transformation, mucin expression may be altered within these tissues leading to particular patterns of expression.
