Background: CBX8 is part of the polycomb group of proteins that are important in embryogenesis and human tumorigenesis and regulates a number of genes involved in cell growth and survival. There are at least 5 CBX proteins in mammals. CBX proteins associate with the core polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) that functions to maintain the transcriptionally repressive state of genes during development.
