Background: Haptoglobin is a 45?48 kDa acute phase glycoprotein that is a naturally inactive member of the peptidase S1 family of serine proteases. It is secreted by multiple cell types and protects tissues from hemoglobin-mediated oxidative damage. Mature mouse (pro)haptoglobin is 329 amino acids (aa) in length. Proteolytic cleavage between Arg102-Ile103 creates disulfide-linked alpha - and beta -chains, which subsequently homodimerize through alpha -chain linkages to create a tetramer. Circulating haptoglobin is 70% tetramer and 30% unprocessed (pro)haptoglobin.
